Five things to check before you buy kefir grains
In short
Five points separate a good order from a disappointing one: live grains in their own milk, from a known method and packed on the day of dispatch, tracked delivery with the total shown before you pay, a real guide with the numbers in the parcel, and a guarantee backed by someone who answers. If a product page doesn't say these things, ask before you buy.
The checklist
- 1. Live grains, in their own milk10 g or 20 g of white grains in a little milk or kefir, in a sealed pouch. That milk is their food and their protection for a week in the post.
- 2. A known method, packed on the day of dispatchWhen you choose where to buy, the method behind the culture matters: grains from time-honoured methods, passed on unchanged, are more vigorous and more resilient. Then, grains strained from a working jar the same morning arrive ready. Grains packed long before arrive slow.
- 3. Tracked UK delivery, total shown upfrontA tracking number by email and the full total visible before you pay, with nothing to settle on the doorstep.
- 4. A real guide in the parcelPrinted or as an e-book, with clear numbers: 20 g, 1 litre of whole milk, 24 hours at 20 to 25 °C, and what the first days look like.
- 5. A guarantee and a person who answersReplacement or refund if the grains don't start, and an email address where someone reads your photo and replies.
Why "packed on the day" matters most
Kefir grains are at their best when they have just finished a jar. Strained that morning and sealed in their milk, they travel in the middle of their routine and pick it up again in your kitchen within two to four days. Along with the method the grains come from, it is the biggest difference between sellers.
How much should you buy?
One pouch of 20 g. That makes a litre a day. Grains grow by a quarter to a half each week, so within a month you have 40 to 60 g: enough for two litres or a second jar. If you would rather start with half a litre, there is a 10 g pouch too.

Checklist questions
Are bigger pouches better value?
Not for a start. Grains grow quickly, so 20 g becomes plenty within a few weeks. Start small and let them multiply.
Do kefir grains have a use-by date?
Live grains don't, as long as they are fed. Dried grains have a best-before date for waking them up.
What do good grains look like?
White to cream, firm and elastic, like tiny cauliflower heads, smelling of fresh tangy milk.
